Digital Marketing

In the late 2000’s the term “Digital Marketing” started to gain popularity and today the term is used almost everywhere. Courses and degrees that specialize in “Digital Marketing” are being offered in numerous colleges and universities throughout the globe.

So a layman might ask “What exactly is digital marketing?”

Well, for starters, it simply means or includes marketing that is done digitally or through digital means.

To make it even simpler, you can kind of say that it is marketing that is done electronically or through electronic devices.

It does not necessarily involve the use of online mediums as most people might think. Digital marketing can be done both online and offline as well. The majority of people usually think that online digital marketing is the only form of digital marketing but they are wrong. We will talk briefly about some of the online digital marketing methods followed by some offline methods as well.

Online digital marketing consists of, but is not limited to the following:

  • Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Social Media Marketing (SMM)
  • Social Media Optimization (SMO)
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Email Marketing
  • Content Marketing
  • Pay-Per-Click Advertising (PPC)

Now I will briefly explain what each of the above term means, but keep in mind that I won’t be getting into the details of how they function or work. It will be just a one or two liner simple definition of the terms.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM): This is when websites use paid means to get their websites to show up in the earlier search result pages like the ad that you see on search pages.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO): This is when websites use organic or unpaid means to get their websites to show up earlier on search result pages.

Social Media Marketing (SMM): This involves the promotion of goods or services by showing ads of the products or services on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Social Media Optimization (SMO): This involves increasing the traffic to your website by using direct links on social media platforms that lead the person clicking on the link directly to your website.

Affiliate Marketing: This is when someone else shows your products on their website for promotional purposes and you give them commission in return.

Email Marketing: By sending emails, a business promotes its goods or services or even shares a link to increase traffic on his or her website.

Content Marketing: This means simply creating content regarding your products or services in order to increase awareness.

Pay-Per-Click Advertising: This involves paying a publisher every time someone clicks your ad or ads. This is done since the ad, once clicked, leads to your website increasing traffic.

Now moving on to the offline methods, basically they fall under 4 major categories:

  • Enhanced Offline Marketing
  • Radio Marketing
  • Television Marketing
  • The Super-Duper Annoying “Telephone Marketing”

Enhanced Offline Marketing: This the marketing that is basically done offline, but improved by using electronic means. Like billboards nowadays, which use videos instead of the usual pictures like in the olden days. The main concept is the same, but the idea is improved by using electronic medium (playing the video), which brings it under digital marketing.

Radio Marketing: This simply involves promoting your goods or services on the air through radios. You can sponsor some radio talk shows or advertise during the shows’ commercial breaks. Radio listeners have certainly declined in number in recent years, but a large number of the population still listen to it, so it is not yet dead.

Television Marketing: This, too, simply revolves around promoting your goods or services on the television channels, like in commercial breaks or sponsoring some shows, drama series etc. Again the same thing is happening as with radio marketing, it is on the decline, but during sport matches, television marketing is still quite effective as it reaches a large number of audiences.

Telephone Marketing: Almost everyone hates this, but it too is part of the digital marketing world.  This not only involves marketing done through telephones, but also through your smartphones, like people calling you to sell goods or inform you about some sort of offer and also sending text messages regarding offer for restaurants and what not.

In the end, I would like you tell you readers, that this is just the tip of the ice berg that I explained today. There is a whole new amazing digital world out there! Be sure to read more about it and dig deeper and keep on digging.
